One of our regular readers Chiranjib has asked that why My Documents folder opens at Windows Startup. Here’s his question:
My documents opens automatically when computer is booted. How to get rid of this unexpectedely opening of my documents?
The Reason:
The reason for this is simple. My Documents folder is in your startup that’s why it’s opening at startup. But this startup is a special type of startup which is initiated by userinit process.
How to fix this:
To fix the problem of My Documents Folder opening at Windows startup, just follow the steps below:
- Go to Start –> Run –> Regedit
- Find the following key:
HKEY_ LOCAL_ MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon - On the right hand pane, find Userinit and double click it to edit its value. Its value should be something like this (depending on your Windows Installation Directory):
c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe - If any additional values are there (most probably My Documents folder will be listed there), remove them and click OK.
- Restart Your Computer.
Most probably My Documents Folder will not come up at startup again.

ok that would be good if only documents came up
but if u only get documents u will need to change shell in the same place to explorer.exe only! NOThing agter that

Thank u to Technize.com and smartvirus remover. i just downloaded this tool.
Thanx this worked great. What cause it to begin with?.
And what about the issue with all the folders you don’t close yourself upon system shut down (you simply press Shut Down and look like Windows closing all applications and open folders and then turns off) opening again on system startup? This one is really driving me mad… Any cure?

hi,
when I start xp, 2 sets of my documents open automatically.I checked the userinit & shell values, they were OK.Yet the problem persists.Any suggestions?
idiot!!!! arghhghghg!! i cant log into the accounts on my computer!!!! since i deletd that file!!! :@
problem is still persisting.registries are ok.
Vista user here. Mine looked like this “c:windowssystem32userinit.exe, userinit.exe”. I deleted the extra userinit, restarted, and no longer pops up on startup. Thanks.
I do not have a website
I did exactly what user “Works Good” did. Although I have a built in fingerprint reader in my computer, and there was an entry after the second userinit.exe that started this service. Deleted just the second userinit.exe, and no more folder, and fingerprint reader works fine. My guess is the fingerprint reader software added the second userinit.exe to the one already there.
Applause to Duno!! I searched everywhere on the black screen issue with Vista and had all kinds of different ways to “fix it” and it never worked. Changing shell value in the same place to explorer.exe only fixed the black screen issue Ive spent hours trying to figure out.
Thanks again to Duno!!!!
You mungrel, I followed your instructions and now I can’t start my pc….you bastard. Watch out for this prick….its a scam
You obviously did not follow the instructions correctly. He did not say to delete the whole key! You idiot!
WARNING! Don’t attempt this advice on this site on your PC. I was locked out of my PC. I had to re-install windows. I lost files, time and money. The instructions provided above will delete your log-in access. Your PC will shut down each time logon. Whatever you do, don’t delete c:windowssystem32userinit.exe if you do, don’t say I didn’t warn you.
