Get open with dialog when opening Windows drives?

Recently, I had been facing this problem on all the virus hit systems on one of my client’s network. The problem was that I was getting the “Open With” dialog every time I double clicked any drive in My Computer. I had to select Internet Explorer from Open With dialog to open the drives. One of my friends came up with an idea and it worked great. The idea was to create a blank autorun.inf file in the drive having problems. And it was perfect .. now I can open all my drives (after placing the blank autorun.inf in the drive) by double clicking them.
To make a blank autorun.inf, open notepad and Save As “autorun.inf”. Place the autorun.inf in the affected drive.

UPDATE: Please use the following DOS command for the ease of deleting the autorun.inf file.
C:\>attrib -S -H -R C:\autorun.inf
C:\>del /F C:\autorun.inf
Replace C with your drive that you want to disable autorun of

I did this and it solved the issue
You will need do a restore point! 🙂
goto registry (regedit or regedt32) and look for this key
    MountPoints2
Under the key, you’ll notice there are some {2938239408…} GUID, just remove the corrupted GUID key.
Add a key called “Shell” in key “C” and “D”.
Once you do that. Close registry editor and double click C or D.
you should view the drive normally. If you want to be certain, go back to the registry key. You should see similar GUID get re-created.
In my case, the registry key was corrupted by virus.

hello sir i have a problem with my notebook my window get corrupted by new folder.exe i am in trouble i install many windows but the prblm is still

  6. Sanix

izhar ali, you should install an antivirus and scan your computer for viruses and then reinstall windows if it gets corrupt. Here is a list of some online antiviruses.
    http://technodigits.wordpress.com/2007/06/27/free-online-virus-scanners/

  7. its a lenghty process but it also work

Looks like an infection with Virus.VBS.Small.a or something similar.
First you should tell Windows to show ‘hidden’ AND ‘system’ files + uncheck ‘hide extensions of registered file types’ in My Computer – Tools – Folder Properties – View. Then do a search for all files with the name “autorun” (ANY extension) and delete them. Be careful: they may be *anywhere* – in player folders, system32, etc.
Then you should open the Registry Editor (Start – Run – regedit) and check the following:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows NT/Current Version/Winlogon
The parameter Userinit in the right window should have the following value C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe. Any additions should be deleted. If your system is installed on disc D, then it will read D:\WINDOWS\and so on…
    Now delete the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/MountPoints2. This step should be repeated for ALL users on the computer including the built-in Administrator account. Now reboot the computer and you should be able to open the discs.
    regards
    hassan

  31. premanannd

I solved the problem in one system by deleting the autorun.inf virus and created a blank autorun.inf. But in another system it is not working .

  32. premanannd

Follow the steps to get your Drives open by double clicking
Make a text file with text
    cd\
    c:
    attrib -r -s -h autorun.inf
    del autorun.inf
now save it as file.bat. then just run the file and Download autorun eater from the link below
    http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Autorun-Eater-Download-85585.html
Install the autorun eater after that let it run in background. Create another text file with subject below:
    [autorun]
    open=autorun.inf
and save it in the C:\ drive as autorun.inf
after you save the file autorun eater will detect it and delete it.now your drive will open by double clicking.
    —–
Change the text file file.bat as per your requirment….Ex
    cd\
    D:
    attrib -r -s -h autorun.inf
    del autorun.inf
RePlacing the C:\ by D:\ work on to open the D:\ drive
I think you will do it….

  33. Sanix

  40. Mike

I have already removed all the viruses from the computer but I was still getting the “Open With” for the C:\ Drive problem. I’ve read through about 20 different forum postings and this was the first forum that mentioned deleting MountPoints2 registry key.
Deleting MountPoints2 registry key worked perfectly for me. I had to fix about 3 of our computers as they all had in sufficient anti-virus and were infected with the Conflicker virus.
Thanks again to this post for solving this problem!
