How to keep Away from Viruses Part 2

In the previous post, I mentioned about how to remove viruses from USB drives, Now I am discussing about the prevention of viruses while surfing the web.

Many web site’s use some type of ActiveX (a browser plugin that can have access to system) Control to install malicious code. Although the ActiveX control is not harmful at all.

Old versions of Internet Explorer that were present in version of Windows XP earlier than Service Pack 2 does not have the ability to protect you from that activeX plugin from being installed automatically. So, In Windows XP Service Pack 2 Microsoft added a newer version of Internet Explorer called Internet Exlporer 6 Service Pack 2.

How to keep Away From Viruses Part 1

Nowadays viruses have created many problems for Home and Business users, I have seen many PC’s becoming virus houses from where viruses spread to other PC’s. These viruses usually spread through removable media (Flash Drives), where they place their autorun.inf files and when anyone opens the drive in his PC, it also became virus deceased.

Many people complaint that they have installed Anti-Virus but it came of no use, because virus was not detected by the Anti-virus program. There can be two reasons for it. Either the program is not performing it’s job or Updated virus definitions were required.

Without keeping an Anti-Virus Up-to date, it is not guaranteed that the virus will be detected. It is an important aspect of the Anti-Virus which should be looked into.

Some people suggest that if you have got a virus then format your hard disk to get your system virus free. But if you do some mistakes then the whole time of installing windows will be wasted, since the virus will again become active in no time. I have kept in mind this point also. So read the following carefully.

Volume Control Program has not been installed

Windows is very bad in terms of protecting itself from other programs. For example, I was installing some device drivers and after I finished everything and double clicked the Windows sound control in the status bar, it gave me the following error:

“Volume Control Program has not been installed”

I did a little research and came to know that sometimes, some device driver will play with the volume control utility and it’ll corrupt the program.

Show Hidden Files and Folders not working?

A few days back, a client came to me and told me that he was having trouble with his Windows XP. The show hidden files and folders was not working at all. If he selected the radio button “Show hidden files and folders”, and then press Ok .. the changes would just disappear upon opening the dialog again. It was probably some virus attack after which the Windows registry was not being updated properly. So here is what I did to restore it back. There are so many methods to restore back the registry. If one method is not working, please try another one.

Method 1:

Go to registry editor by running regedit in the run box.
Go to this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoft
WindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced
